The story itself is a good one but the language and some of the subject matter is truly rough. His intelligence seems to be unlimited and his compassion knows no bounds.

I like Ben's character but he is almost too good to be true. During all of this he has dream-like conversations with a being he calls "Hey-Soos" which appears to be a spiritual entity who helps Ben see that keeping his secret is doing a great disservice to those he loves.

He also tries to help the town drunk straighten out his life and to put his small town of Trout, Idaho, on notice for being the small-minded bigoted village it has become. Ben also sets his sights on the beautiful Dallas Suzuki and is astounded when she agrees to date him. Being a small teen boy has always kept him from playing football but Ben decides to join his beloved brother Cody on the team and the two Wolfe boys pull off some amazing plays. As he is already eighteen years old Ben forbids his doctor to inform Ben's parents and Ben sets out to have the most normal last year of his life that he possibly can. Entering his senior year of high school Ben learns from his sports physical that he has a terminal disease and will be dead within a year. Every day is a day that simply can't be wasted, and Ben Wolf knows this more than anyone. Reading this gave me the push I needed to live life like there is no tomorrow. This book was given to me during a time in which I was too afraid to go after any of my dreams. Knowing he has nothing left to lose, he is able to put himself out there, seeking his desires as passionately as he can. He fights for the truth in a history class run by a fascist. He pursues the girl he once was too afraid to go after.

Ben joins the football team, earning his place as one of the better members on the team as he rushes headlong into human walls without any fear of being hurt and ruining the rest of his life. He manages to accomplish much in his short time left.

He makes it his goal to truly live life while he can, and not to let anyone hold him back because of his illness. Understanding that if anyone else knows about his condition they will force him to spend the rest of his now short life in bed, taking medicine, and doing nothing, Ben decides to keep it a secret. The characters are a bit exaggerated but then again, aren't most characters exaggerated? Ben is going into his senior year of high school when he finds out that he has a terminal illness. This is not a book that I would typically choose to read (I am a man of fantasy) but I thought it was really good.
